Thomas Smith

I am a student of architecture, currently studying for my Part 1 at Hull School of Art and Design.

Architecture for me is about people and place.

Place, or environment, is what stimulates the senses of people and offers an emotional basis valuable to architectural design. Logical analysis of the sense of an environment is a methodology I apply for extracting and projecting this emotional basis as its presence surrounds the building. Therefore, in order to transform the environment into a landscape surrounding the building, its three basic components, topography, microclimate and ecosystem, are analysed and recorded as architectural design parameters.

The result of the analysis is to build a shell-filter that, through its structural resistance, is able to eliminate the destruction of natural elements and, through its penetrability, transform the initial, introvert, sense of protection and safety into a final, extrovert, sense of friendliness towards the natural environment. It is precisely this that which I seek in my designs as, I believe, it is this which impels the people to participate and return the emotional basis first sensed and recorded at the beginning of the project.

I am not interested in design which is led by an aesthetic, but more design which results in an aesthetic derived from a methodology in order to create a sense of place for the end user.
